Surah Abasa – English Transliteration (1–42)

1. Abasa wa tawallaa
2. An jaa’ahul a‘maa
3. Wa maa yudreeka la‘allahu yazzakkaa
4. Aw yazzakkaru fatanfa‘ahuz zikraa
5. Amma manistaghnaa
6. Fa anta lahu tasaddaa
7. Wa maa ‘alayka allaa yazzakkaa
8. Wa amma man jaa’aka yas‘aa
9. Wa huwa yakhshaa
10. Fa anta ‘anhu talahhaa
11. Kallaa innahaa tazkirah
12. Faman shaa’a zakarah

33. Fa idhaa jaa’atis saakhkhah
34. Yawma yafirrul mar’u min akheeh
35. Wa ummihi wa abeeyh
36. Wa saahibatihi wa baneeh
37. Likullimri’im minhum yawma’idhin sha’nun yughneeh
38. Wujoohun yawma’idhin musfirah
39. Daahikatun mustabshirrah
40. Wa wujoohun yawma’idhin ‘alaihaa ghabarah
41. Tarhaquhaa qatarah
42. Ulaaa’ika humul kafaratul fajarah

Surah Abasa – English Translation (Saheeh International) (1–42)

1. He frowned and turned away
2. Because there came to him the blind man.
3. But what would make you perceive that perhaps he might be purified
4. Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
5. As for he who thinks himself without need,
6. To him you give attention.
7. And not upon you is any blame if he will not be purified.
8. But as for he who came to you striving for knowledge
9. While he fears Allah,
10. From him you are distracted.
11. No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;
12. So whoever wills may remember it.
13. Recorded in honored sheets,
14. Exalted and purified,
15. Carried by the hands of messenger-angels,
16. Noble and dutiful.
17. Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.
18. From what substance did He create him?
19. From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;
20. Then He eased the way for him;
21. Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.
22. Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.
23. No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
24. Then let mankind look at his food –
25. How We poured down water in torrents,
26. Then We broke open the earth, splitting it with sprouts,
27. And caused to grow within it grain
28. And grapes and herbage
29. And olive and palm trees
30. And gardens of dense shrubbery
31. And fruit and grass –
32. As provision for you and your grazing livestock.
33. But when there comes the Deafening Blast
34. On the Day a man will flee from his brother
35. And his mother and his father
36. And his wife and his children,
37. For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
38. Some faces, that Day, will be bright –
39. Laughing, rejoicing at good news.
40. And other faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.
41. Blackness will cover them.
42. Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.

Surah Abasa Tafseer (Ibn Kathir Summary)

Surah Abasa was revealed in Makkah. The opening verses refer to the incident when the Prophet ﷺ was the leaders of Quraysh, hoping they would accept Islam. During this time, the blind companion Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum (RA) approached seeking guidance. The Prophet frowned slightly because he was focused on the chiefs. Allah immediately corrected this action, showing that sincere seekers of guidance are more honorable than arrogant leaders.

Allah emphasizes that the Qur’an is a reminder preserved in honored and purified sheets, carried by noble angels. No human status or wealth determines who deserves guidance. Taqwa and sincerity are what matter.

The Surah then reminds mankind of his humble origin created from a sperm-drop, provided sustenance, given life and death, and will be resurrected. Despite all these blessings, many humans remain ungrateful.

Allah directs humans to reflect upon their food how rain falls, earth splits, crops grow, fruits and vegetation flourish all as provision. This shows Allah’s power and mercy.

The Surah concludes with scenes of the Day of Judgment. When the Deafening Blast comes, people will flee even from their closest relatives. Some faces will shine with joy, while others will be covered with dust and darkness the faces of disbelievers and wicked ones.
