Surah Ad Duha (The Morning Brightness)

Ayah by Ayah (Arabic, Transliteration, Translation)
| وَٱلضُّحَىٰ ﴿١﴾ |
| Wad-duhaa |
| By the morning brightness |
| وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَىٰ ﴿٢﴾ |
| Wallayli idhaa sajaa |
| And [by] the night when it covers with darkness |
| مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَىٰ ﴿٣﴾ |
| Maa waddaa‘aka rabbuka wamaa qalaa |
| Your Lord has not forsaken you, nor has He hated you |
| وَلَلْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَّكَ مِنَ الْأُولَىٰ ﴿٤﴾ |
| Walal-aakhiratu khayrun laka minal-oola |
| And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life] |
| وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَىٰ ﴿٥﴾ |
| Wa lasawfa yu‘teeka rabbuka fatardaa |
| And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied |
| أَلَمْ يَجِدْكَ يَتِيمًا فَآوَىٰ ﴿٦﴾ |
| Alam yajidka yateeman faaawaa |
| Did He not find you an orphan and give [you] refuge? |
| وَوَجَدَكَ ضَالًّا فَهَدَىٰ ﴿٧﴾ |
| Wa wajadaka daallan fahadaa |
| And He found you lost and guided [you] |
| وَوَجَدَكَ عَائِلًا فَأَغْنَىٰ ﴿٨﴾ |
| Wa wajadaka ‘aa-ilan fa-aghnaa |
| And He found you poor and made [you] self-sufficient |
| فَأَمَّا الْيَتِيمَ فَلَا تَقْهَرْ ﴿٩﴾ |
| Fa ammal-yateema falaa taqhar |
| So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him] |
| وَأَمَّا السَّائِلَ فَلَا تَنْهَرْ ﴿١٠﴾ |
| Wa ammas-saa-ila falaa tanhar |
| And as for the petitioner, do not repel [him] |
| وَأَمَّا بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ فَحَدِّثْ ﴿١١﴾ |
| Wa amma bini‘mati rabbika fahaddith |
| But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it] |

Tafseer (Ibn Kathir Summary)
This Surah was revealed to console the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when revelation paused for a time, and the disbelievers mocked him saying that Allah had abandoned him. Allah swore by the morning brightness and the still night that He had not forsaken His Messenger. Instead, the Hereafter will be far better for him, and Allah will continue to grant him until he is pleased.
Allah reminded the Prophet ﷺ of His blessings: He sheltered him as an orphan, guided him when he was unaware, and enriched him after poverty. In return, he was commanded to never oppress the orphan, never turn away the seeker, and always proclaim Allah’s blessings. The Surah teaches hope, patience, gratitude, and compassion for the vulnerable.
