Al-Qariah
The Striking Calamity

Ma al-Qariah
What is the Striking Calamity?

Wa ma adraka ma al-Qariah
And what can make you know what the Striking Calamity is?

Yawma yakoonu an-naasu kal-farashi al-mabthooth
It is the Day when people will be like scattered moths,

Wa takoonu al-jibalu kal-‘ihni al-manfush
And the mountains will be like fluffed wool.

Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],

Fahuwa fi ‘eeshatin raadiyah
He will be in a pleasant life.

Wa amma man khafafat mawaazeenuh
But as for one whose scales are light,

Fa-ummuhu haawiyah
His refuge will be an abyss.

Wa ma adraka ma hiyah
And what can make you know what it is?

Naarun haamiya
A scorching fire.

Tafseer (Ibn Kathir Summary)

Surah Al-Qariah vividly describes the Day of Judgment, portraying people scattered like moths and mountains like fluffed wool. Ibn Kathir explains that this imagery emphasizes the magnitude and chaos of the Day, showing how everyone’s deeds will be weighed.

The “scales” metaphor indicates that those with heavy good deeds will enjoy Paradise, while those with light scales will face the abyss. The surah warns of accountability, the consequences of ignoring Allah, and the severity of the Hereafter.

The repetition of “Wa ma adraka ma al-Qariah” stresses the inability of humans to truly comprehend that Day without divine guidance.
