Surah An-Naba English Translation
About what are they asking one another?
About the great news.
That over which they are in disagreement.
No! They are going to know.
Then, no! They are going to know.
Have We not made the earth a resting place?
And the mountains as stakes?
And We created you in pairs.
And made your sleep for rest.
And made the night as clothing.
And made the day for livelihood.
And constructed above you seven strong heavens.
And made a burning lamp.
And sent down from the rain clouds pouring water.
That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation.
And gardens of entwined growth.
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time.
The Day the Trumpet is blown and you will come forth in multitudes.
And the heaven will be opened and will become gateways.
And the mountains will be moved and will become a mirage.
Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait.
For the transgressors, a place of return.
In which they will remain for ages.
They will not taste therein any coolness or drink.
Except scalding water and foul fluid.
An appropriate recompense.
Indeed, they were not expecting an account.
And denied Our verses with emphatic denial.
But all things We have enumerated in writing.
So taste, and never will We increase you except in torment.
Indeed, for the righteous is attainment.
Gardens and grapevines.
And companions of equal age.
And a full cup.
No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood.
A reward from your Lord, a generous gift.
Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful.
The Day the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows.
That is the True Day.
Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment.
Tafseer of Surah An-Naba (Ibn Kathir Summary)
Surah An-Naba discusses the reality of the Day of Judgment and the resurrection that many disbelievers used to deny. The surah begins by mentioning the arguments of the disbelievers who questioned the “great news” — the resurrection after death.
Allah reminds mankind of His power through signs in creation such as the earth, mountains, sleep, night, day, the heavens, the sun, rain, and vegetation. These signs show that the One who created all these things certainly has the power to resurrect people after death.
The surah then describes the events of the Day of Judgment: the blowing of the trumpet, the opening of the heavens, and the destruction of mountains. Hell is described as a place prepared for the transgressors where they will remain for long periods, receiving punishment as a result of their disbelief and denial of Allah’s signs.
In contrast, the righteous believers will receive great rewards including gardens, fruits, companionship, and peace. They will not hear any vain or false speech in Paradise.
The surah concludes by emphasizing the certainty of the Day of Judgment and warns people about the near punishment. On that day, everyone will see the results of their deeds, and the disbeliever will wish that he had been dust.
